INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups dried split peas
  • 10 1/2 cups cold water
  • 12 ounces beer
  • 1 ham bone
  • 1 onion , sliced
  • 2 celery ribs , with leaves (optional)
  • salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS

  1. Pick over pease and soak overnight.
  2. Drain; add remaining ingredients, except seasonings.
  3. Simmer 3 to 4 hours or until soft.(note if using a crockpot you can cook this on high about 4 to 6 hours or on low 8 to 10 hours).
  4. Remove bone and celery, rub through a seive and season.If soup is too thick add boiling water.
